Malware

Malware is an umbrella term for many forms of malicious software, computer programs created with the intention of causing harm. There are many forms of malware including: viruses, spyware, trojans, and many more.

Viruses: Perhaps the most well known computer security threat, a computer virus is a program written to alter the way a computer operates, without the permission or knowledge of the user. A virus replicates and executes itself, usually doing damage to your computer in the process.

Spyware: A serious computer security threat, spyware is any program that monitors your online activities or installs programs without your consent for profit or to capture personal information.

Trojans: These are malicious software that often appear legitimate and fool people into accessing them by several social engineering techniques. Unlike other spyware, Trojan horses cannot install themselves automatically.

Phishing

Masquerading as a trustworthy person or business, phishers attempt to steal sensitive financial or personal information through fraudulent email or instant messages. Phishing is often flagged as spam by your email service these days but, that is not the only way to be scammed. Phishing can occur when you receive a phone call and the caller tries to get any verification information from you. Often times these people run through security questions and account numbers. Be aware of this and ask for an employee id number before giving any information. We recommend calling the company to verify the identity of the employee.

Data Loss

There are many ways to lose your files. Your hard drive fails, your files were held ransom by hackers, or they were simply corrupted. There are many ways to prevent data loss or, at least, make it less likely.

Cloud Storage: This is a service model in which data is maintained, managed, backed up remotely and made available to users over a network (typically the Internet). We recommend utilizing services provided by Google or Dropbox to protect your data from any possible hardware failures.

Bi-Weekly Backups: If you still feel the best way to protect your data is to back it up yourself, make sure to use the best possible drives for storage. Backing up your data frequently is very important. This will ensure that you do not lose any updates to files.
